Rectifying Raster Data - Rubbersheet

This blogs discusses the transformation methods used to Rubbersheet Raster Images in AutoCAD Raster Design
 
When rectifying a raster image using the Rubbersheet tool in AutoCAD Raster Design, you can select either Triangular or Polynomial transformation method to transform the raster image. 

Triangular Image Transformation
In the triangular image transformation method, the raster image is divided into triangular regions using the user specified control points. Note that the Denaulay Triangulation method. is used for computing triangulation. Next, transformation is applied to each triangular area.  As a result this method produces much more accurate transformation than the polynomial image transformation method. 

Note that, this method applies transformation to that part of image which is within the area defined by the Denaulays triangulation. The portion of the image laying outside the triangulation is not transformed.  As a result, the Raster Design discards the image data outside the triangulated area which leads to the loss of data. To minimise the loss of data, ensure that the control points are placed as close to the image extents as possible. 

Polynomial Image Transformation
The polynomial image transformation method, transforms the entire images by matching the source and destination points as close as possible. Unlike the triangular transformation method, this method applies transformation on the entire image and therefore does not result in loss of image data. However, this method does not always result in perfectly matched source and destination points. The positional error between the actual destination point (destination point on transformed image) and the destination point specified by the user is given by:

Positional error = √ (∆x + ∆y)

Using this method, you can specify the polynomial degree in the Degree edit box corresponding to the Polynomial radio button. Note that the higher polynomial degree will increase positional accuracy of the image points at the matching locations (source point and destination points), but will increase in warping of the image at locations away from the control points.

To specify a higher polynomial degree you will require to specify a minimum number of control points. The minimum number of  control points for polynomial degrees are as follows:

Autodesk AutoCAD- Live Maps (Bing Maps)

Live Maps (Bing Maps)
Autodesk has introduced the Geolocation feature in its AutoCAD based software, that allow the user to use the Bing Maps as the mapping service. Using this feature, an user can now integrate the spatial data (raster and road) provided by Bing maps within the project environment.

The Bing map services are free services but to use them you are required to Sign In to your Autodesk 360 account. Also, as this is an online mapping service, you will require an internet connection to connect to the Bing map data.

Displaying Bing Map Data into AutoCAD Map 3D
Ensure that your project has a coordinate system assigned to it and then login to the Autodesk 360 account.

Next, enter the GEOMAP command in the command line and then press ENTER; you are prompted to specify the map type that you want to add.
        To add a high resolution satellite/ aerial image, enter Aerial in the command line 
        To display the Bing maps road data, enter Road in the command line
        To display the aerial photo along with the road data, enter Hybrid in the command line.

After specifying the required map type, press ENTER; the selected map will be displayed in the drawing.

AutoCAD Map 2014 Error - FDO Provider OSGeo...... Not Registered

In case you have upgraded from an older version of AutoCAD Map 3D to the latest (2014) version, it is likely that you may have come across the 'FDO Provider OSGeo...... Not Registered' message while importing data into the Map 3D 2014 environment  (as displayed below).  You may have also faced difficulties when trying to export data (MAPEXPORT / MAPDWGTOSDF command) in Map 3D 2014

These errors are seen on computers having AutoCAD Map 3D 2014 installed along with a previous version of versions of Map 3D. These errors are the result of Map 3D being  NOT able to read the latest FDO providers. AutoCAD Map 3D reads the FDO provider from an XML file that is located in the installation folder.

To resolve the issue, download and save the provider.xml file and save it in the following location

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Autodesk AutoCAD Map 3D 2014\bin\FDO

AutoCAD Map 3D 2014 Enhancement -User Interface


Here are some of the User Interface enhancement that you will notice when using AutoCAD Map 3D 2014 for the first time.



File Tabs
The File Tabs displayed above the drawing area shows every drawing that has been currently opened. You can use these file tabs to switch between drawing files. The order of the displayed tab is according to the sequence in which the drawing file were opened.


Geographic Marker Visibility button
The Geographic Marker Visibility button is newly added to the Application Bar. You can use this button to control the visibility of the geographic marker in the drawing window.


Autodesk 360 SignIn
Autodesk 360 is a cloud computing platform introduced by Autodesk. This platform provides a set of cloud services and products that can help you share, simulate, visualize and design your work. You can access to the Autodesk 360 services using your Autodesk ID. To login to your Autodesk 360 account, choose the Sign In button in the InforCenter bar and then enter your credentials in the Autodesk-Sign dialog box. Upon validation of your credentials, you will be provided access to your AutoCAD 360 account.

Once signed to your account, you can use various Autodesk 360 services such as the Live maps and data sharing. Using Autodesk 360 services will be discussed in next blogs.

Map 3D: Create Surface using LiDAR Data (point Cloud)

This tutorial will demonstrate the procedure to create a 3D surface using point cloud in AutoCAD Map 3D. To create a 3D surface using LiDAR Data in AutoCAD Map 3D, you will require the point cloud data as an  indexed point cloud data file.  

Step 1  Manage LiDAR data and create indexed point cloud data store 
  • To create a index file, choose the Index File tool from the Point Cloud panel of the Create tab; the Point Cloud Manager dialog box will be displayed.
  • In this dialog box, choose the Add File button.; the Open dialog box will be displayed. Next, browse and select the required point cloud data file(LiDAR .LAS, ASCII .xyz, or .point cloud .isd) in the dialog box and then choose the Open button; the selected file is added to the list in the Point Cloud Manager dialog box.
  • Next, specify the coordinate system for the selected file data file. To do so, click in the Coordinate System cell; a browse button will be displayed in this cell. Next, select this button; the Coordinate System Library window will be displayed. In this dialog box, choose the required CRS for the data file.
  • You can also filter the point data before creating an index file by applying data filters. To do so, click in the Filter cell in the Point Cloud Manager dialog box; the Filter Point Cloud dialog box will be displayed.  Use the options in this dialog box to define the parameters of the filter and then choose the Apply Filter button; the filter parameters will be applied to the selected point cloud file.
  • Next, choose the Generate Index button in the Point Cloud Manager dialog box. On generation of index, a green tick mark is displayed corresponding to the selected point cloud file name.
  • Next, choose the Add to map button; the selected file will be added to the drawing (If the data is not visible; then try using the zoom tools)

Step 2  Generating surface from the indexed point cloud data store file
  • Choose the Create from Point Cloud tool from the 3D Surface panel of the Create tab; the Surface Manager dialog box will be displayed.
  •  In this dialog box, add the indexed point cloud data store created in the previous step. To do so, choose then Add File button.
  • Next, specify the parameters for the surface to be created. To do so, click in the Parameters cell in the list of the Surface Manager dialog box. On doing so, the Grid Parameters dialog box will be displayed. Use the options in this dialog box to specify the required surface parameters and then choose the OK button to apply and close the Grid parameter dialog box.
  • Next, choose the Generate Surface button in the Surface Manager dialog box. On generating the surface, a green colored tick mark will be displayed against the selected point cloud index file. 
  • Next, choose the Add to the Map button to add the created surface to your drawing (use the zoom tool if required to zoom to the created surface )

Create a Join AutoCAD Map 3D

 Join data table to a feature layer (.SHP) in AutoCAD Map 3D 

You can use the Joins tool in AutoCAD Map 3D for joining the attributes in one data table (or data table of another feature layer) to the Data Table (primary) of another feature layer (such as SHP, SDF).

To create a join between two feature layers, such shape files, select the primary feature layer (to which you want to join another table) in the Display Manager tab of the Task Pane. You will notice that the Vector Layer contextual tab is displayed in the ribbon. Next, choose the Join tool from the create panel of this tab; the Create a Join dialog box is displayed. Notice that the name of the primary table is displayed in the Primary table initiating the join box. 

Choose the table that you want to join (to the primary table) by choosing an option from the Table (or feature class) to join to drop-down list. Next, you will require to specify the key columns in both tables. AutocCAD Map 3D will use the values in these columns to match the records while creating the join. Next, Specify the type and cardinality  of the join by choosing an radio button in the Type of Join and Releationship with Secondary Records (Cardinality) areas, respectively.  Next, choose the OK button; a join will be created based on your specified options.

Creating Object data table




Object Data Table

In AutoCAD Map 3D, object data table are used to store non-geographic (aspatial) data. You can create an object data table by defining the table structure in the Define Object Data window.

Creating an Object Data Table-
  • Choose the choose the Define Object Data tool from the Attribute Data panel of the Map Setup tab; the Define Object Data dialog box will be displayed.
  • In this dialog box, choose the New Table button; the Define New Object Data Table dialog box will be displayed.
  • In the Define New Object Data Table dialog box, specify table name in the Table Name edit box.
  • To define attribute fields, specify the name in the Field Name edit box. 
  • Next, specify the data type stored in the field by selecting an option from the Type drop-down list.
  • Optionally, write a brief description of the data field in the Description text box.
  • To assign a default value to the data field, enter a value in the Default edit box. 
  • Next, choose the Add button; a data field with the specified name will be added in the Object Data Fields area of this dialog box.
 Repeat this process to add required fields to the data table.
  • After specifying the required fields in the Define New Object Data Table dialog box, choose the OK button; the dialog box will be closed
  • On doing so, the Define Object Data Table dialog box will be closed and the created table will be displayed in the Define Object Data dialog box.

The drawing object represents the geographical location of the real world feature. Apart from the geographic location, a feature may have aspatial information associated with it. For example, a post box may have data such as post code or mail collection time associated with it. You can store such non-geographic data corresponding to the object in an object data table.

Coordinate Reference Systems


Coordinate Reference system (CRS)
A CRS defines how an object relates spatially to the locations on the Earth’s surface. Using a coordinate reference system, you can integrate multiple datasets with different CRS into your project. Assigning appropriate coordinate system is the most essential part of the data preparatory work. 

A CRS associates a coordinate system with an object by means of a datum. The definition of a CRS must encompass a definition of a coordinate system and a datum. Everest 1830, NAD 83 and WGS 84 are some of the commonly used datum. 

Geographic data can be represented using the Geographic coordinate system in terms of latitude, longitude, and height. Projected coordinate systems are derived from geographical coordinate systems by means of map projections. Map projections always result in Cartesian coordinate systems.


The Prime Meridian located at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich is used as a reference point for measuring Longitudes or East/West angles. Longitude (ʎ) of a point is defined as the angle from the prime meridian to the meridian plane of a given point while latitude (Ø) is the angle between the equatorial plane and the perpendicular to the ellipsoid through a given point. The figure above shows the latitude and longitude of point P.
